LES Boston Chapter Meeting

DATE & TIME
Tuesday, March 12, 2013
4:30 PM – 7:00 PM

TITLE
Financing or Insuring Intellectual Property Enforcement/Defense

DESCRIPTION
Surveys over the last decade have established median costs of patent litigation as $1.5 million through discovery and $2.5 million through trial and appeal for cases in which $1-25 million were at risk.  How can a small- or middle-market company afford to enforce its patent rights?  If it can’t, why would others respect their patents?  And how would they defend against assertion by others?

In the high-margin industries served by members of LES, the problem is endemic. We expect at this meeting to exchange ideas on this theme and otherwise network around brief presentations of solutions:

Stephen Y. Chow, Esq., of Burns & Levinson LLP, a high-tech patent practitioner, litigator and transactional lawyer, will present a current matrix of options (including administrative and investor-backed) and supply written materials with additional detail.

Garen P. Suzan of Trilogy Insurance Group, Inc., will reprise portions of a very-well attended LES webinar on “Intellectual Property Risk Management,” outlining available insurance options for both enforcing and defending against enforcement of intellectual property.

There will be an explanation of the tasks, costs and general strategies of litigation that will help in business planning.

LOCATION
Burns & Levinson Conference Center, 8th Floor
125 Summer Street (one block from South Station)
Boston, Massachusetts

LES 2013 Annual Meeting Call for Proposals Extended to 3/1

LES (USA & Canada)

Dear Seth,

We've extended the Workshop proposal submission deadline for the Licensing Executives Society (USA & Canada), Inc. Annual Meeting to Friday, March 1. Don't miss your chance to speak at the Meeting! Please visit the LES 2013 Annual Meeting proposal submission site to submit your proposal.

Successful workshop proposals will be consistent with the Annual Meeting theme, "IP Matters in Every Deal." The full set of proposal guidelines and submission and review criteria can be found on the LES 2013 Annual Meeting website.

Strong preference will be given to workshops addressing:

  • Current trends and hot topics in Licensing;
  • Strategies and tools to effectively develop, manage and commercialize an IP portfolio;
  • Deal Considerations and examples of licensing deals that follow the theme of "IP Matters in Every Deal"; and
  • Technology and industry issues related to LES sectors (High Tech, Life Sciences, CEEM, IUGI, and Consumer Products).

To ensure a meaningful and rewarding experience for all attendees, successful workshop proposals will not only be topical but will include diverse perspectives and meaningful dialogue. We encourage you to include presenters and panelists from diverse professional settings, e.g., private industry, both large and small; government, and academia; and, as appropriate, representing diverse perspectives, e.g., licensing, business development, legal, regulatory, etc.  We also encourage you to promote meaningful dialogue throughout the session by allowing the audience to contribute to the conversation. While we recognize that some workshops might well be structured as traditional presentation-style sessions (e.g., with a PowerPoint), preferential consideration will be given to proposals for workshops that include diverse perspectives and involve an interactive format permitting active and engaged audience participation.

Additionally, the 2013 Annual Meeting schedule and format includes fewer workshops than prior years' meetings with the expectation that the content will be of the highest caliber, and the audience will be greater in number, thereby ensuring a more worthy shared experience for all participants. Plan for a larger audience than previous years' meetings!

Online proposals can be submitted at: http://www.lesusacanada.org/meetings/annual-meeting/2013-annual-meeting/2013-annual-meeting-proposals/
The deadline for submission is March 1, 2013.

The LES 2013 Annual Meeting will take place September 22-25 in Philadelphia and is the premiere IP, licensing, and technology business development event of the year - featuring 3 ½ days of high-quality educational sessions, and ample networking opportunities.

We encourage all who wish to share their knowledge and expertise to visit our guidelines and submit a proposal. Thank you for your contribution to the LES 2013 Annual Meeting.

Best regards,
