7/11 Webinar - Discuss Resolution of Technology Licensing Disputes

Licensing Executives Society (U.S.A. and Canada)

Take a Practical, Hands-On Look at the Pros and Cons of Dispute Resolution

RESOLUTION OF TECHNOLOGY LICENSING DISPUTES: COLLABORATIVE MODELS TO AVOID HIGH-RISK AND HIGH-COST LITIGATION
Wednesday, July 11, 2012
1 PM EST / Noon CST / 11 AM MST / 10 AM PST (90 Minutes)

Litigation is a risky and expensive way to resolve technology licensing disputes. Lost business opportunities, huge legal bills, uncertain outcomes and enforcement are just a few of the problems with litigation. Mediation and arbitration promise cheaper, more effective ways to resolve licensing disputes. Do they work as promised?

Three experienced mediators and arbitrators provide a practical, hands-on look at the pros and cons of dispute resolution, with a focus on international technology licensing. We will provide practical tips on:
(i) how to build alternative dispute resolution into licensing agreements;
(ii) how to manage disputes during the life of the agreement; and
(iii) how to deal with disputes when they arise, to avoid unnecessary escalation and conflict.

5 Reasons You Must Not Miss the LES Annual Meeting

LES (USA & Canada) 2012 Annual Meeting - October 14-17 / Toronto
Dear Seth,

Here are just five compelling reasons why you must not miss the LES Annual Meeting on October 14-17 in Toronto:

#1 Keynote Speaker: Dr. Eric Topol, Director, Scripps Translational Science Institute

Dr. Topol, premier cardiologist, genetic researcher, and technologist, will address "Connecting & Collaborating: The Convergence of Life Sciences and High Tech." A leader in the movement to modernize medical treatment through the latest technology, Dr. Topol has been named the Most Influential Physician Executive in Health Care by Modern Healthcare, Doctor of the Decade by the Institute for Scientific Information, and a "Rock Star of Science" by GQ. Watch Dr. Topol in action at TEDMED and see why.

#2 New Innovative Programming: A Crowdsourcing Session on: Carving Out Your Commercial Space - Strategies and Trade Offs

Kathleen Denis of The Rockefeller University and Richard Razgaitis of Charles River Associates will facilitate a new, unique interactive session on how enterprises can best use tools to carve out commercial space. Input from a variety of industry sectors will be solicited from the crowd to help all of us improve our toolboxes, knowing that there is no one right answer in any deal.

#3 Featured Session: Is High Tech Crazy? Are We Experiencing a Patent Bubble?

Hear Dooyong Lee, Acacia, Jonathon Skeels, Davenport & Co., and Joff Wild, IAM Magazine dissect recent mega-deal activity in the high tech industry and tell us what's next and if this paradigm will spread to life sciences.

#4 Featured Session: Benches Unleashed: Judicial Views on Fixing the Systems

Outspoken Justice The Honourable Roger Hughes of the Federal Court of Canada and ever candid Judge Paul Michel, retired Chief Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, will identify problems and offer up solutions for improved protection and enforcement of inventions in the US and Canadian patent environments.

#5 Opportunities to Connect with Your Peers

As always at LES, the Annual Meeting will ensure you have ample opportunity to connect with new friends and colleagues and meet up with old ones, including a Networking Reception at the phenomenal Four Seasons Centre for Performing Arts.

TITLE
Implications and Ramifications of the America Invents Act for Strategic Alliances

DESCRIPTION
The America Invents Act ("AIA") represents the most significant change to the US patent system since 1952, and has received considerable attention. One area that has not been fully explored, however, is the effect the AIA has had and will have on strategic alliances, including mergers, joint ventures and licensing. The Boston Chapter of LES is pleased to sponsor an expert panel presentation and discussion on the implications and ramifications of the AIA for strategic alliances.

SPEAKERS
Hemmie Chang, Esq.
Partner, Foley Hoag LLP

Hemmie will provide insight on the implications the AIA has for licensing, and pitfalls to avoid when negotiating and drafting a license post-AIA.

Robert Millman, Esq.
Managing Director, MPM Capital

Robert will discuss the implications of the AIA for IP due diligence, and the effect the Act has had, and may have, on life science deal making.

Jeremy Younkin, Esq.
Partner, Foley Hoag LLP

Jeremy will provide an IP litigator’s perspective on how the AIA may influence litigation aspects of a strategic alliance, focusing on post-grant review.

DeAnn Smith, Esq.
Partner, Foley Hoag LLP

DeAnn will present a basic overview of AIA and will moderate the panel.
